US steel imports increase by 8.9% in December 2020

According to the preliminary statistics of the U.S. Department of Commerce, the total amount of steel imports in December 2020 was 13567.36 million tons, an increase of 8.9% over November and a year-on-year decrease of 6.2%.

By product category, the total import volume of semi-finished steel products in December was 128798 tons, higher than 122418 tons in November and lower than 199684 tons in December 2019. In December, the total import volume of flat steel products was 663626 tons, higher than 572905 tons in November and 655955 tons in December 2019. The total import volume of long-term steel products in December was 258936 tons, lower than 297465 tons in November and higher than 234266 tons in December 2019. The total import volume of steel pipes in December was 2523.43 million tons, higher than 1613.27 million tons in November and lower than 2906.73 million tons in December 2019.

According to AISI data, the US steel import market share is estimated to be 18% in December 2020, 17% in November and 18% so far this year.
