To ensure that Steel A131 meets mechanical property requirements, three key factors must be established: sampling location, specimen orientation, and whether testing is conducted on a per-batch or per-plate basis. Tensile and impact test specimens must be oriented according to the relevant standards—typically perpendicular to the rolling direction—and taken from specified locations at the ends of the plates. If the sampling location or orientation is incorrect, the test data, regardless of how favorable the results may appear, are invalid for compliance assessment.
Standard delivery typically involves batch-based inspection, where samples are taken from a single plate to represent the entire batch—a common industry practice. However, for critical applications such as heavy-gauge plates or components requiring Z-direction properties, project specifications often mandate per-plate testing, which entails different costs and lead times. Another frequently overlooked point is that the actual yield strength of thicker-gauge steel is generally lower than that of thinner-gauge steel. Therefore, compliance should be verified based on the thickest gauge in the order, rather than relying on test reports from thinner-gauge material.
BBN Steel supplies various grades of Steel A131 shipbuilding plates. Mechanical properties are verified in accordance with classification society standards, and we can arrange for per-plate testing and the issuance of corresponding certificates to meet specific project requirements. When requesting a quote, please provide the steel grade, the maximum thickness, and the inspection requirements so that we can accurately plan the sampling process and delivery schedule.
