On an inspection report for A131 steel, the "impact energy" section typically lists three separate values; the assessment is not based on the highest of these. The average of the three test specimens must meet the specified requirement, and no single individual value may fall below 70% of that requirement. This is the standard evaluation method used by classification societies, as the overall toughness is determined by the collective data from these specimens.
Values can also fluctuate within a single steel plate. Differences in impact energy may occur between the head and tail ends, or between the edges and the center of the plate—variations often caused by elemental segregation and uneven deformation during the rolling process. Consequently, the sampling location must be traceable; otherwise, the data lacks a meaningful basis for comparison. If a test fails, the standards allow for re-testing with double the number of specimens. However, passing a re-test does not mean the underlying defect has been eliminated; it is usually necessary to investigate factors such as the purity of the steel (from the smelting stage) and the heat treatment protocol.
BBN Steel supplies A131 marine-grade steel plates in Grades A, B, D, and E, as well as high-strength variants. We provide impact test reports—available on a per-plate or per-batch basis—and can supply heavy-gauge plates in a normalized condition. When requesting a quote, please specify the required impact test temperature, sampling orientation, and acceptance standards.
