Material Characteristics:
The addition of 2-3% molybdenum significantly enhances the corrosion resistance of 316 stainless steel, achieving a PREN (pitting corrosion equivalent) value of 26-28, particularly outstanding in chloride-containing environments. Typical applications include desalination equipment, chemical reactors, and other extreme corrosion environments, withstanding intermittent operation at temperatures up to 1200℃.
Performance Comparison:
Compared to 304 stainless steel, 316 offers over 40% greater resistance to intergranular corrosion in high-temperature and high-pressure environments, making it particularly suitable for demanding applications such as oil pipelines and pharmaceutical equipment. Laboratory data shows an annual corrosion rate of less than 0.01mm in a 5% salt spray environment, resulting in a service life up to 15 times that of ordinary carbon steel.
Special Advantages:
The low-carbon version of 316L (carbon content ≤ 0.03%) further reduces the risk of intergranular corrosion in the weld heat-affected zone, making it the material of choice for safety-sensitive applications such as nuclear power and medical implants. In practice, the use of 316L in the anchoring system of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge has increased its design life to 120 years.
